Leafwings are a tropical subfamily (Charaxinae) of butterflies with about ten different species having some type of documented presence in the United States. The Goatweed Leafwing (Anaea andria) has the largest range of the group, found in the Southwest, Midwest and Southeast.
They are large butterflies. The top picture shows a male, with an orange wing and slight dark border. Females have a more elaborate border wing pattern.
The bottom picture shows a side view of the same male. The leaf like appearance of the wings explains the subfamily's common name.
The caterpillars primarily feed on goatweed, explaining the butterfly's name.
